Winter Cheer or Holiday Stress?

I think Ruth hit the old nail on the head with her statement, "I realize I can never bring back the excitement of my childhood, but I can block out the self-imposed stress. I can adjust my perspective". As I've gotten older I realize the power of adjusting my perspective. I try not to dwell on the negative side of life but rather live life to it's fullest with the positive aspects in my life as my guide to my own fulfillment. One often can’t avoid the negative things in our lives but, for the most part, we can choose not to let those things take control of our attitudes, at least not for very long.

Joni Mitchell does a beautiful description of how it all can affect my mood.

There will always be negative people or people so burdened by their own troubles that they can't experience joy. They're with us all year long; it's just more discouraging during the holidays when our spirits are up (and more vulnerable than we think). I'll follow your lead: But when I envision myself taking a walk among stars on the Winter solstice, bundled up, my gloved hand on the arm of the man I love, I realize that the holidays force me to appreciate the moment and treat myself to a little indulgence in good cheer, wishes for hope, and expressions of love. Keep goodness with you.

Luanne, you and Mike are right to carry your positive perspectives through the entire year. It's easier said than done, for sure. While we cannot heal the burdens of others, we can stay strong. Then, we might come to find them leaning on us instead of tearing us down.
